Periodontal Treatment

Most dentists will treat your teeth. But McCosh Family Dentistry also treats the areas around your teeth, including your gums, bones, and supporting ligaments. This is known as periodontal treatment. Periodontal dentistry is a specialized field that only specially trained dentists are allowed to perform. It can be essential in treating things like gum disease and other common oral health issues and can help ensure a brighter, healthier, and comfortable smile.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease can affect the gums and is very common among most people. The problem is very few people know that they have it because the early stages of periodontal disease are relatively symptom- and pain-free. It is only when the disease advances to the stage when you can feel discomfort that it becomes an issue — and by then it may be possible to treat it to keep it from becoming worse but it may be too late to do anything to reverse it.

An estimated four out of five people will suffer from periodontal disease at some point in their lives. It is the top cause of tooth loss and according to some studies could be linked to other conditions including stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

But at McCosh Family Dentistry, our periodontal services can identify problems with the gums, bones, and supporting ligaments in their early stages and correct them before they can cause damage or pain. Good oral health combined with regular dental visits with a professional trained in the treatment periodontal disease — such as McCosh Family Dentistry — can help reduce the risk of developing periodontal disease.

Early Treatment

But the best way to prevent periodontal disease in the first place is by early detection. At McCosh Family Dentistry, our periodontal services can spot the symptoms of gum disease and periodontal disease early before they can take hold. Then we can provide you with the treatment you need so that it doesn’t advance into a serious problem.

For periodontal treatment that can make your smile brighter and your mouth happier and healthier, visit McCosh Family Dentistry, South Florida’s full-service dental care provider.

Tooth whitening and bleaching

Daily dental care such as brushing and flossing will help keep your teeth and gums healthy. But if you want the kind of bright, white smile you see on TV, in movies, or in your favorite magazines then you should consider tooth whitening and bleaching at McCosh Family Dentistry. Brushing and flossing remove food and debris from tooth surfaces and the areas between your teeth, removing plaque, preventing the formation of cavities, and reducing the risk of gum disease and other serious dental health issues. But preventative dental care isn’t enough if you want to dramatically brighten your teeth. To get white, bright teeth and a brilliant smile that will turn heads, improve your look, and even help boost your confidence and self-esteem requires professional tooth whitening and bleaching.

Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening is a relatively new procedure that can brighten tooth surfaces and remove stains. In recent years, many different teeth whitening methods have been introduced, including home kits that can take weeks or even months to complete.

But teeth whitening at McCosh Family Dentistry can not only be faster but also more effective than over-the-counter products. In some instances, patients can see noticeable results in as little as one 30- to 60-minute treatment.

Professional teeth whitening at McCosh Family Dentistry can lighten teeth up to 8 times more effectively than storebought whitening strips or teeth whitening toothpaste. It is also highly recommended for patients with heavy stains due to prolonged tobacco use, aging, or consumption of liquids that can worsen staining such as red wine, coffee, and brown soda pop.

The tooth whitening and bleaching professionals at McCosh Family Dentistry use a bleach-based whitening agent that is applied directly to the tooth’s surface. This process can be enhanced with the use of a light or laser that makes the whitening gel even more effective. For severely stained teeth, multiple tooth whitening and bleaching appointments may be required.

Stop being embarrassed by your smile and let McCosh Family Dentistry give you the kind of bright, white, spectacular teeth you will want to show off wherever you go! Our tooth whitening and bleaching services truly deliver a bright, beautiful smile.

Roots Canals

get a bad rap. But contrary to public opinion, root canals don’t have to be unpleasant. In fact, there’s usually nothing to be afraid of. At McCosh Family Dentistry, we can provide fast, pain-free root canals that fix serious dental issues and leave your teeth healthier, safer, and more durable.

What’s a Root Canal?

A root canal is when a dentist specially trained to treat the interior of the tooth — called an endodontist — removes an infected part of a tooth’s inner root. Then the dentist cleans and refills the space before sealing the tooth permanently with a new crown to restore its original function.

Signs that you may need a root canal can include tooth discoloration, bad toothaches, headaches that extend to the jaw region, and severe sensitivity or intolerance to heat or cold.

At McCosh Family Dentistry, we are the trained endodontists who can help your teeth feel better. We routinely perform root canals on many of our patients who need them. While common stereotypes portray root canals and prolonged and painful, the truth is they are relatively simple treatments that can be performed in-office with minimal discomfort during and after the procedure.

Pain-Free Root Canals

Most patients of our patients are very comfortable throughout the root canal procedure. And afterward, they can enjoy full use of the tooth so that it feels better than brand new.

Root canals are performed to address serious dental issues such as inner decay, chipped or cracked teeth, traumatic injury, or repeated surgery or dental procedures on the tooth. But they can provide both relief and improved cosmetic appearance of the affected tooth. The procedure saves your natural tooth and often looks and feels completely normal once fully healed.

For root canals that are safe and painless and provide lifelong relief from serious dental issues, you can rely on McCosh Family Dentistry.

Dental Crowns

Crowns essentially are an imitation tooth that is placed on top of the original, natural tooth in order to provide protection and strength while maintaining the original look. Dental crowns typically look and feel exactly like your own natural teeth and they can last a lifetime without having to be repaired or replaced.

In some instances, crowns also can be used to fill gaps between teeth. They also help protect against oral disease and plaque formation and can dramatically enhance the appearance of your smile.

As the name implies, dental bridges cover missing teeth and “bridge” the gap between two or more crowns. They look as natural as your existing teeth while anchoring the teeth on either side of the bridge.

When teeth are missing, it can lead to noticeable changes in speech, biting and chewing. Dental bridges can help minimize or eliminate these changes so that your teeth look and feel like normal. Permanent bridges can last a long time, in most cases 10 years or even longer. And they can improve the physical appearance of your smile, boosting self-esteem and personal confidence.

Dentures are removable prosthetic teeth that can restore your natural smile by replacing or covering missing teeth. Patients with dentures often experience improved and more comfortable mouth functions such as chewing and swallowing. Dentures also can improve your ability to speak normally.

Whether the type of dental repair services you need — such as dental crowns, bridges, and dentures — you can find the comprehensive dental services you want at McCosh Family Dentistry.

We recognize that many adults have had or still have ‘dental anxieties’ and that sometimes those anxieties may be inadvertently or subconsciously conveyed to your child. To avoid this, we’ve outlined some pre-planning tips you as the parent can do to help both you and your child have a great experience at our office.

Tooth Whitening

  • Very young children don’t have a realistic sense of time. Wait until the day of the appointment to inform your child. Tell them you’re going to visit a tooth doctor who will count their teeth and teach them how to take care of their teeth.
  • Emphasize the adventure of visiting a new place, meeting new people and being the center of attention. Do NOT use words like ‘drill,’ ‘hurt’ or ‘needle’ – they are inappropriate and will only create anxiety in your child.
  • Go to our website and let them watch our video on the Home page and perhaps show your child the photos of the doctor, and her team by going to our “Meet the Doctor” page.
  • We examine infants and toddlers while sitting on their parent’s lap in the dental chair.
  • If your child has a special toy or a blanket they rely on when they are anxious, please bring it to the appointment. We check teeth of dolls and stuffed animals, too, so if your child has a favorite one, please bring it!
  • Parents can be present while their child is being examined and to interact with the doctors and staff. We explain everything in an age appropriate manner so your child learns while having fun.

What happens during the exam?

At every exam we will review your child’s health history; take any necessary x-rays; clean your child’s teeth (if any are present); conduct a thorough clinical examination of your child’s mouth, palate, gums, tongue and teeth; and teach them about good food choices and how to brush and floss their teeth. Prevention in dentistry is the best treatment we can offer!

After every examination, we provide parents with essential information about your child’s dental health:

  • An assessment of your child’s risk for decay;
  • An evaluation of your child’s soft tissues and gums;
  • An evaluation of your child’s bite and dental growth.

The saying “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is true when it comes to dental care for kids.

Prevention is the key!  Starting at birth, clean your child’s gums with a soft infant toothbrush or cloth and water. As teeth begin to appear, start brushing twice daily and add floss picks when the teeth start touching. Make sure your child has a healthy balanced diet avoiding gummy vitamins, fruit snacks, fruit roll ups, and other sticky sugary candies. Milk and juice contain sugar and should be limited in frequency and to mealtime. Proper homecare, regular dental visits, and a balanced diet will set the precedent for a lifetime of healthy habits.

Did you know that more than 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental-related problems? Parents and caregivers can help prevent lost school days by teaching their children to follow the 2-2-2 rule. The 2-2-2 rule is easy to follow and includes three simple steps: Visit the dentist two times each year. Brush and floss your teeth two times each day. Brush your teeth for two whole minutes.
